SiOCAST at FOOTWEARISE:
Faster Prototyping, Lower Tooling Risk, and Real Footwear Materials

FOOTWEARISE has become a reference point for teams that are actively rethinking how footwear is developed and manufactured in Europe. In the latest edition, held on December 4–5 in Ciudad de la Luz (Alicante, Spain), the event brought together designers, innovation leaders, material specialists, and manufacturers focused on digital fabrication and new production models.
For SiOCAST, this edition was especially meaningful: it was our third year exhibiting, and it confirmed something we have been seeing more and more in the market—footwear brands and factories are under pressure to deliver faster iterations, reduce development cost, and validate concepts using final, footwear-grade materials before committing to traditional metal tooling.
Why FOOTWEARISE mattered for this conversation

FOOTWEARISE positioned itself as more than a conventional trade show. With a strong mix of conference and exhibition, and hosted in one of the most unique venues in the region, it created the right environment for technical discussions—less marketing, more engineering and product decision-making.
This edition took place in Alicante, a strategic hub for Spain’s footwear ecosystem, and the program narrative reinforced the industry’s direction: bridging digital workflows with manufacturable solutions, shortening time-to-market, and enabling new approaches to fit, feel, and fabrication.
What we showcased: injection in silicone molds for footwear
At our booth, we demonstrated how our soles injection process with SiOCAST silicone molds can be applied to footwear components—especially when the goal is to move from design intent to a functional prototype without the cost and lead time of metal molds.
In practical terms, we surprised many manufacturers and designers with a workflow that is straightforward to understand and immediately relevant to their day-to-day constraints:
Digital design of outsole/midsole/component geometry
3D-printed master (or master made via another rapid method)
Silicone mold creation using SiOCAST mold technology
Injection of footwear-grade plastic materials to validate form, details, assembly interfaces, and design intent under realistic constraints
The key point resonated: brands can validate a concept using realistic materials and geometry before making a long-term tooling decision.

The footwear pains we heard repeatedly (and how the technology answered them)
Across conversations with European teams, the same problems came up—often with different wording, but the same operational impact.
1) Tooling cost arrives too early in the process
Traditional development forces an uncomfortable decision: invest in expensive metal molds early, or accept that prototypes won’t behave like the final product.
SiOCAST helped reposition that decision—metal tooling can remain a scale-up step, not a barrier to learning.
2) Iteration speed is incompatible with today’s market cycles
Footwear calendars are compressing. Teams need to test more options faster: geometry variants, traction patterns, branding details, and functional tweaks.
Our approach enabled rapid iteration cycles without resetting the budget every time the design changed.
3) Prototypes are often “representations,” not validations
A prototype that cannot be tested in the right materials and construction context is limited. Many teams we met were specifically looking for ways to validate outsole concepts, feel, and interfaces using final-material behavior, not a stand-in.

Collaboration Spotlight: Framas + Balena
At FOOTWEARISE, it became clear that real footwear innovation is built through complete workflows, not standalone technologies. That’s why we also highlighted two collaborations that strengthen the path from concept to market:
Framas plays a key role in sole design and industrialisation, helping footwear teams turn ideas into manufacturable outsole concepts—faster and with less prototyping risk.
Balena adds a strategic materials dimension, supporting brands looking to explore more sustainable material options as part of future footwear development and product storytelling.
Together with SiOCAST’s injection process with silicone molds, these partnerships open new opportunities to iterate faster, reduce early-stage tooling costs, and launch market tests and limited drops while the timing is still right.
What this enabled in real business terms
The most important outcome of FOOTWEARISE was not just interest in the process—it was the clarity of how this could unlock concrete opportunities:
Faster market entry for short campaigns and limited drops
Brands want to react to trends and collaborations. When tooling and lead times are heavy, launches get delayed or abandoned. By enabling short runs and pre-production-style prototypes, SiOCAST helped teams envision faster “drop-ready” development cycles.
Lower-risk innovation for manufacturers
Factories often receive new concepts late, with little room to de-risk before committing capacity. We discussed how silicone-mold injection can support earlier feasibility validation: critical geometries, flow assumptions, assembly compatibility, and visible quality criteria.
More iterations, more confidence
Instead of choosing between two design options due to time and cost constraints, teams could explore five or ten. The value is not only speed—it is improved decision quality.
What’s next
After FOOTWEARISE, our focus is on continuing the conversations started in Alicante—specifically with teams looking to:
modernize their prototyping workflow,
reduce cost and lead time in early development, and
test designs using realistic materials and manufacturing constraints.
If you are a footwear brand, developer, or manufacturer looking to accelerate iteration cycles and delay metal tooling until the concept is truly validated, SiOCAST is ready to support you.
Let’s talk about your next outsole, midsole, or component project—and how quickly we can get you from concept to injected prototypes.
